Welcome back to another episode of Five Minutes With, where we highlight those who are making an impact. I’m Morgan Yonge, joined by Miranda Gahn with Lex Aero. Miranda, thank you for being here.
Speaker 3
It’s a pleasure. Thank you for having me.
Speaker 2
Yes. So tell us who is our guest today?
Speaker 3
So today we have the pleasure of hosting Steve Stivers. He is the CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. Welcome, Steve. We’re excited to have you.
Speaker 4
It’s great to be on Miranda. Great to see you again. I know we served together for a number of years before you moved to Florida, and, I’m excited for everything you’re doing in your law firm.
Speaker 3
Well, thank you so much, Steve. So tell us a little bit about what your goals and objectives are for this year, for the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and any other projects or, excuse me, you’re working on this year.
Speaker 4
Sure. The Ohio Chamber of Commerce has been around since 1893. It’s a business association that, has a mission to basically, look out for the free enterprise system, economic competitiveness and foster growth of the Ohio economy for the benefit of all Ohioans. And this year, is a political year. So we’ll be focused on making sure that the right candidates get elected to help make the business climate, as solid as it can be in Ohio, so that Ohio is a great place for people to work, live and raise a family.
Speaker 4
We also are rolling out something, an update of something we call the blueprint for Ohio’s economic future. That’s something we rolled out in 2022. It’s a blueprint that makes Ohio more competitive over time. And, we’re doing it in partnership with Accenture. And, we since we rolled it out in 2002, Ohio moved from the, seventh best economy in CMC’s rankings to number five.
Speaker 4
And our goal is to move to number one. So we’re well on our way. We started out number 12 when I got at the chamber to the chamber in 2021. So we’re certainly on the move. And Ohio’s doing well. We build things in Ohio and make things happen. We’ve got a great workforce and we’re a great place to live.
Speaker 2
That is fantastic. I absolutely love to hear it. So tell me a little bit more about those side projects that you’re working on. Something with drones.
Speaker 4
Yeah. So, and since I’m just doing aviation law, I thought that it’d be really interesting to cover. So I served in the Ohio National Guard for 37 years, retired as a major general about two years ago, and a few of my friends from the military and I are working together to create a drone company. It’s called Detector Aerial Systems, and it’s going to do commercial work with drones and some other work with drones.
Speaker 4
We’re really excited for what it can do, and I’m lucky to have a network of people that are really solid on things like operations and things like SOPs and creating standards and following checklists because we want to be the safest, best, most efficient, drone services company. In the Midwest or anywhere in the country. So I’m really excited about this project.
Speaker 4
I’m a partner in this organization, and we’re moving forward now. And, we’ll be up and running, by the summer. So we’re going through all the processes now, but we just got, licensed with the state of Ohio, and now we’re moving forward with some financing and building our drone fleet and building our logistics and building our staff.
Speaker 4
It’s an exciting time. And obviously with everything Miranda does in aviation law, I thought that would be a really interesting discussion. With the rise of autonomous vehicles and what they can do to help serve commercial customers or do entertainment.
Speaker 3
Well, that’s really exciting. It sounds like you’ve got a lot of great things planned for your business. Steve. Any consideration or any challenges that you’re running into with regard to regulations? You know, drones are still a very new, you know, aviation aspect. So I’m curious to know what are your plans for that, if any?
Speaker 4
Well, as you know, Miranda, the Federal Aviation Administration, the FAA is sometimes really hard on drone companies. You have a hard limit that you have to stay under. There’s a ton of regulation. They’re going to be very challenging to deal with. That’s why I’m really excited that I have a very seasoned operations manager who’s dealt with the FAA in multiple instances, and I have an experienced fighter pilot, helicopter pilot and drone pilot as our lead pilot dealing with the FAA and of course, all of our pilots will be FAA licensed, to be drone pilots, so that that is going to be one of the biggest challenging pieces of launching this
Speaker 4
drone. Company Vector Aerial Systems is dealing with the Federal Aviation Administration, with all the regulations that they put forward and all the restrictions they put on drones. Currently.
Speaker 3
Well that’s fantastic. It sounds like you have your bases covered. Is there anything else you’d like to share with us? It sounds like you’ve got a lot of great things going on, both with the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and with your own personal venture.
Speaker 4
Well, there’s I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire. It’s a really exciting time in the US economy to do interesting things. And we’re on the cusp of, another set of technological breakthroughs with autonomous vehicles. I’m super excited to be getting involved in the drone world and seeing where it takes us and what we can do to help our commercial clients and even do some entertainment with them.
Speaker 2
That sounds like an awesome venture. Well, thank you so much for sharing with us today and we appreciate your time and viewers. Thank you for tuning in to another episode of five minutes with.
